Your will is one of the most important documents you’ll write. It ensures that your loved ones are looked after when you are no longer around, and that your final wishes are respected.

If you don’t have a will we recommend that you visit the Law Society website for a list of legal professionals in your area who will be able to help you prepare your will.

There are several different types of gift you can leave in your will to charity:

  • Residuary gift: This is a percentage share of your total estate after other payments, debts, taxes and administrative expenses have been deducted.
  • Pecuniary gift: This is a fixed amount of money, otherwise known as a cash gift and isn’t dependent on the size of your estate.
  • Specific gift: This is a particular item of value such as a personal possession, property or shares.
  • Reversionary gift: This is where you set up a trust in your will so that someone can enjoy the benefit of some money or property during their lifetime. Afterwards, the remaining money or property would come to support Re-engage’s work.

If you leave a gift in your will you may be able to reduce or even eliminate your inheritance tax liability. Gifts to charities are 100% tax free and are taken out of your estate before any tax is calculated.

In addition, if you leave at least 10% of your net estate to charity, after certain deductions, your inheritance tax rate will be reduced from 40% to 36%. However, this is a complex area so we recommend that you seek professional advice.

Please see www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax for more information.

There is no obligation to tell us that you have remembered Re-engage in your will and we will always respect your privacy.
